The Staysharp knife
In 1964 80% of all of Americans could not sharpen a knife. This situation was a worry for a design engineer at Wiltshire Cutlery in Melbourne, named Dennis Jackson. He thought about this for a while, until he thought of a self-sharpening system. How he created this marvellous creation was he created a spring loaded sharpening block inside a scabbard, so the knives would be sharpened every single time they were pulled out. It wasn't that easy though, as it took five years to perfect the self-sharpening knife with the help of Stuart Devlin, the one and only designer for the decimal coins, to make the Staysharp knife. How could you live now without a knife that can be sharpen itself at all times?
the Life Saving Reel
In 1906, a member of the group Bondi Surf Bather Lifesaving Club, Lyster Ormsby and Percy Flynn designed a concept on the life saving reel with a cotton reel and two bobby pins. The first life sized model was by John Bond at the Victoria Barracks, Paddington and the last design was made by Sydney coach-builder G.H. Olding. The life saving reel became a part of the lifesaving community on Sunday, 24th March 1906. The way it works is the life saver attaches a 27 kilo reel to himself and swims as fast as he can to the victim. When the life saver is in contact with the victim,he would detach himself and attach the swimmer. The life saver on the beach would now reel the swimmer in.The life saving reel was used all around the world until 1994.
